If your child is in danger right now

Call or text 988 for the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, or text HOME to 741741 for the Crisis Text Line. Both are free, confidential and open all day and night.

What is reasonably well established

That displaced sleep affects adolescent mood and functioning is not seriously contested. That recommendation systems optimize for engagement is a description of how they work rather than an allegation. That some internal research measured effects on young users is a matter of public record through disclosed documents and congressional testimony.

What is genuinely contested

Whether social media use causes adolescent mental health problems at a population level, and how large any effect is, is actively disputed among researchers who are all looking at the same data. Some find a small effect, some find none, some argue the measurement itself is wrong.

This site does not pick a winner. A page that pretends this is settled loses exactly the readers who check.

Why the mechanism matters more than the correlation

For a parent, the useful question is not whether there is a population-level effect. It is whether this is happening to this child. For a court, the question is narrower still: whether a specific design decision produced a specific harm.

Both of those questions are about mechanism, which is why the spokes below are organized around how rather than whether.

Three different kinds of help

These are separate on purpose. A parent looking for clinical help should never arrive in a legal intake queue by accident.

Getting help

A family doctor first, the school counselor second, a therapist third. The first two are faster and cheaper, and both can refer you onward.

Finding help

We do not provide treatment and take no payment from anyone who does.

Reporting and resources

Reporting an image or an adult, what a school can actually do, and the organizations worth your time.

Resources

Nobody pays to be listed and listing is not endorsement.
